Thermistors

For Ambient Temperatures
Thermistors are metal oxide sensors which provide a large output for a given temperature change. For ambient temperatures, thermistors are the preferred temperature sensor as they combine fast response time and a reasonable operating range, -50°C to + 150°C. Long cable lengths can be used. Small sized thermistors (code type SU) are intended for use in miniature probes including catheter and hypodermic needle probes. The following thermistor types cover the temperature range -50°C to + 150°C very well. If your normal ambient is at the the extreme of the range then alternative thermistor types may be preferred, please contact Eltek if this is your requirement.

Types:

U and UU: Normally 2000 ohms at 25°C

UU: UU sensors have identical charateristics to type U themistors but with increased accuracy

YSI: Normally 2252 ohms at 25°C

Thermocouples

Wide Temperature Range
Thermocouples can be used over a very wide temperature range (-200 to +2500°C) but do not provide the accuracy of thermistors or PRTs at normal temperatures. They have quick response times and are suitable for a very wide range of applications. Thermocouples must be used with special connecting leads and connecting plugs. Refer to the table following for suitable interconnecting cables and plugs. Long cables can be used.

PRTs (Platinum resistance)

Accurate at High Temperatures
PRTs are best suited for measuring temperatures down to -100°C and up to +600°C with good long term stability and accuracy. Due to the small change in resistance of PRTs, cable resistance can affect the accuracy of the sensor. Three or preferably four wire cables should be used and long lengths should be avoided. Refer to the table following for suitable interconnecting cables. Eltek Squirrels support only Pt100 Platinum Resistance Sensors.
