GENII monitoring for a −80 °C university biobank

Supporting research groups across genomics, cell therapy and translational medicine, the biobank needed a monitoring platform that was compliant, scalable, and reliable at temperatures where many generic systems struggle.

The challenge

The storage estate spanned −80 °C ULT freezers, cryogenic vapour-phase storage and backup freezers across multiple rooms and buildings. Manual checks were time-consuming and not fully auditable, regulatory expectations around data integrity were rising, and the system had to scale with future growth, all while protecting samples that have no second copy.

The GENII solution

The university deployed GENII loggers across its low-temperature estate: high-accuracy probes suited to −80 °C, continuous gap-free logging with local data buffering to survive power or network interruptions, centralised real-time visibility, and configurable multi-stage email and SMS alarms for early intervention. Installation caused minimal disruption, keeping labs operational throughout.

Compliance and outcomes

GENII provided full audit trails, time-stamped non-editable records and support for GxP-aligned workflows and deviation investigation, evidence that stands up to inspection without relying on manual logs. Since deployment the biobank has reduced sample-loss risk through early-warning alarms, eliminated manual checks and gained a platform that grows with future research.
